Overview

The most beautiful heritage train journey and the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, the Settle to Carlisle Railway will take us through breathtaking landscapes. Choose from a day in one of Yorkshire’s great cities of York or Harrogate and sail away from the pretty lakeland village of Pooley Bridge on a heritage cruise on iconic Ullswater Lake.

PACKAGED ITINERARY

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 York or Harrogate
Today is your choice to spend a day in one of Yorkshire’s great cities.
Learn about Harrogate’s fascinating spa history visiting the Royal Pump Room Museum or admire the stunning architecture of the Royal Hall followed by an Afternoon Tea at Bettys and then stroll the shops or perhaps RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Stroll the medieval Shambles and ancient city walls, marvel at the breathtaking York Minster, enjoy a river cruise or perhaps dive into history at one of the many museums that York has to offer.

Day 3 Settle to Carlisle Railway
After an early breakfast, we make our way to Settle to board a morning train on the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway. On our two-hour journey, we traverse 72 miles of unspoilt countryside, soaking up the breathtaking scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, crossing the world-famous Ribblehead Viaduct, and travelling through the Pennines and into Cumbria. Once in Carlisle, we enjoy free time in the Border City. Visit Tullie House’s Roman treasures, admire Carlisle Cathedral, wander the historic castle walls or stroll the River Eden, and finish with coffee in the city centre.

Day 4 Northern Lakes
This morning, we make our way to Pooley Bridge, to board our Ullswater Steamer for a one-way cruise to Glenridding. Upon disembarking, we hop back on-board our coach and traverse the incredible Kirkstone Pass and ‘The Struggle’ bringing us down into Ambleside. We have free time here before winding past Rydal Water, Grasmere and Thirlmere before arriving in Keswick. We have free time here before making our way back to the hotel in time for dinner.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we make our way home.

Crown Hotel, Cumbria

Originally a farmhouse in 1700 and converted into an inn in 1838, then a hotel in 1871, the Crown Hotel is perfectly situated in the village of Wetheral, a short drive from Carlisle, with the River Eden and the abbey and church ruins a short walk away. Each bedroom is designed with comfort and style in mind and includes tea/coffee making facilities, TV, Wi-Fi and hairdryer. Due to the age of the building, there is no lift in the hotel, but there are a number of ground floor rooms. The Conservatory Restaurant is styled with elegant décor and large windows overlook the picturesque gardens, whilst Walton’s Bar offers a more relaxed setting with traditional décor. Leisure facilities are available for use for all guests, which includes swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. Please note due to the historic nature of the building, rooms are split across several wings which can have external access.
