The Rhine, Some Wine & Rüdesheim

Overview

Renowned for its white wines, vine-coated hillsides and half-timbered medieval towns, Germany’s Rhine River Valley is as breathtaking as it is historic. Our packaged tour sees us based in charming Rüdesheim with a day to enjoy this picturesque valley, whilst also including free time in history-rich Mainz before taking a guided tour of the Eberbach Monastery. We also visit the fine university town of Heidelberg, and enjoy plenty of amazing wine tastings along the way!

Itinerary

PACKAGED ITINERARY

Day 1 Arrival
We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2 Mainz, Eberbach Monastery & Wine-Tasting
This morning, we enjoy free time in history-steeped Mainz. Visit the fascinating Gutenberg Museum, dedicated to Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the movable-type printing press here more than 550 years ago: tracing the story of printing and viewing its original Gutenberg Bibles. We can also admire fabulous, red-sandstone Mainz Cathedral, and spend time exploring the cellars – and sampling the sparkling wine – of the city’s historic Kupferberg Wine Cellars. After free time for lunch, we enjoy a 90-minute tour and tasting of Eberbach Riesling wine at the nearby Eberbach Monastery. Tastebuds tingling, we then head to the RheinWeinWelt wine cellar to sample more of the good stuff – we taste 10 wines, helping ourselves from the self-serve dispensers. With around 160 different wines from the Rhine region on offer, we must choose wisely!

Day 3 Rüdesheim Driver’s Day Off
We spend today at leisure in Rüdesheim. We can spend time exploring the famous Drosselgasse area in the heart of Rüdesheim old town, sampling a glass of wine along the way, or, for the more adventurous among us, we may wish to take the cable car up into the vineyards and enjoy the views from the Niederwald Monument.

Day 4 Heidelberg
This morning, we head to the famous medieval city of Heidelberg. This outstanding city boasts the oldest – and one of the finest – universities in all Germany. To help us get our bearings we enjoy a 90-minute guided walking tour of the city before spending the rest of the day at leisure. As we wander the narrow streets of the old town, we can admire the iconic Heidelberg Palace that dominates the skyline as well as the Alte Brücke (Old Bridge) straddling the Neckar River.

Day 5 Departure
After breakfast, we begin our journey home.
