Day 2 Salisbury & Salisbury Cathedral
We spend today in the wonderful medieval city of Salisbury, with its historic streets and alleyways and half-timbered buildings. We enjoy the morning at leisure, perhaps visiting one of the fascinating museums (Salisbury Museum, Arundells or The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum), admiring the 18th-century Mompesson House or simply browsing the mix of high street and independent shops. This afternoon, we visit the city’s highlight: magnificent 13th-century Salisbury Cathedral. This vision of medieval beauty boasts the UK’s tallest spire, a working 14th-century clock and an original copy of the Magna Carta. Our visit to this 800-year-old masterpiece includes a guided tour and a tasty cream tea.

A morning free in historic Winchester provides a fabulous opportunity to explore England’s former ancient capital as we wish. Amongst the sights in its medieval and Georgian centre are majestic Winchester Cathedral, the coronation site of many English monarchs, the 13th-century Great Hall, home to King Arthur’s Round Table; and the exterior of Jane Austen’s House, where the author died in 1817. We can also choose to visit some of Winchester’s charming museums and shops and relax over lunch in one of its many appealing restaurants This afternoon, we visit nearby Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, an arboretum covering 180 acres with an unparalleled collection of oaks, camelia, magnolia and rhododendron.
